Last week, my 4th graders learned about Dia de los Muertos in art class! It is translated into "The Day of the Dead". This is a celebration from South American and Central America that celebrates the lives of loved ones that have passed. This is not a sad or scary, but instead a very joyous occasion. It was really great having students in my classes that have actually been to the celebrations. They were able to give a real description of the events!
We designed our own Sugar Skulls, which the students LOVED. They thought it was "so cool". I got this idea from deepspacesparkle.com .
First, we watched a short youtube video that explained more about the celebration. Next we studied other sugar skull designs. After that, the students drew their own skull on a piece of white paper, using oil pastels. The last step was to cut it out and glue it to black paper.
