Second graders have been working on these wonderful "Story Quilts". We read "Tar Beach" and learned about artist and author Faith Ringgold. My students really loved the book and imagining that they could fly was really fun!
For the pattern squares around the picture, students made their own patterns on a two inch grid paper using AB, AAB, ABB, ABC, and random patterns. They were able to make about 18 squares on a piece of copy paper. They cut out these patterns and glued them around their paper. For the rest of the squares, I found these wonderful wall paper sample books in my storage closet. I cut out quite a few pages and then cut them into two inch squares to help fill out the frame for their artwork. I think this helped give it that "fabric" look.
Next, they drew any building(s) they wanted to own... most chose a castle, but I suggested their own house, a dream house, school, neighborhood, apartment building, and skyscrapers. They also had to put themselves in the picture somewhere, preferably flying over the building. They could use markers, colored pencils, and crayons. When they were finished, they were to write a short story about their art, making it a true "story quilt".
She went above and beyond with hers! Look at all the details in the houses in her neighborhood! :)
